About this piece

The original Game Boy in a square frame.

In 1989 Nintendo and designer Gunpei Yokoi released a gray brick with a green dot-matrix screen, four AA batteries and a copy of Tetris in the box. It went on to sell well over 100 million units together with its successors and became the console that started portable gaming as we know it, from Super Mario Land to the first Pokémon Red and Blue.

A NOTE ON CHARACTER

Each piece is built from a real pre-owned device, so light scratches or small signs of age may show. We think they are part of its story.

03 / From the workbench

Made by hand in Los Angeles.

We know how much a Game Boy can mean, because we grew up with them too. Every piece starts with a real device that our studio team disassembles by hand, cleans part by part, lays out and mounts in our Los Angeles workshop. It is slow, careful work, and it finally lets you see the engineering hidden inside the device you once spent countless hours with. This is how we bring it a second life.
