Apple iPhone 1st Generation Multi-Layer 3D (2007)

On January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs walked on stage at Macworld and introduced “an iPod, a phone and an internet communicator” in one device. The original iPhone, with its 3.5-inch multi-touch screen, brushed aluminum back and a single home button, changed how the whole world communicates, and every smartphone since traces its roots back to it. In this piece the parts are spread across five transparent acrylic layers, front to back, so you can look through the phone the way an engineer would and see how it was built.

Most people never get to see what is inside the phone that stayed in their pocket every day for years. At FunBox Design, our studio team takes every original iPhone apart by hand: careful disassembly, deep cleaning of every single part, layout design, and final production in our Los Angeles workshop. It takes hours of patient, screw-by-screw work, because these devices hold some of our own best memories too. Our goal is simple: bring them a second life.
