Omega Speedmaster (1957)

The Omega Speedmaster was born in 1957 as a racing chronograph. In 1965, after a series of brutal tests, NASA qualified it for all manned space missions, and on July 21, 1969, Buzz Aldrin wore a Speedmaster on the surface of the Moon during Apollo 11, the moment that earned it the name “Moonwatch.” A year later, astronauts used it to time a critical engine burn that helped bring Apollo 13 safely home. Its black dial, three sub-dials and tachymeter bezel have barely changed since, and the engraved caseback celebrates its place in space history.

A mechanical watch like the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch hides hundreds of tiny parts that almost nobody gets to see. In our Los Angeles studio, our team arranges each gear, plate, spring, dial element and hand by hand, layer by layer, between clear acrylic panels, so the whole watch floats open in an exploded view you can study from every angle. It is slow, careful work, and our tribute to one of the greatest designs in watchmaking.
