About this piece

In 1976, legendary designer Gérald Genta, the story goes, sketched the Patek Philippe Nautilus in just a few minutes, inspired by the porthole of a transatlantic ship. A luxury watch made of steel, with a rounded octagonal case, “ears” on its sides and an integrated bracelet, it broke every rule of fine watchmaking at the time. Decades later it became one of the most wanted watches on the planet: the blue dial Nautilus 5711 had waiting lists of years, and when Patek Philippe announced its end in 2021, prices exploded. Its horizontally embossed blue dial is an icon of modern watch design.

A mechanical watch like the Patek Philippe Nautilus hides hundreds of tiny parts that almost nobody gets to see. In our Los Angeles studio, our team arranges each gear, plate, spring, dial element and hand by hand, layer by layer, between clear acrylic panels, so the whole watch floats open in an exploded view you can study from every angle. It is slow, careful work, and our tribute to one of the greatest designs in watchmaking.
