Rolex GMT-Master II (1982)

The story of the Rolex GMT-Master began in 1954, when Pan Am pilots flying across oceans needed a watch that could show two time zones at once. A fourth 24-hour hand and a two-color bezel made it possible at a glance. In 1982 Rolex introduced the GMT-Master II with an hour hand that could be set on its own, making it possible to track three time zones. Among all its bezel colors, the red and black combination collectors call the “Coke” is one of the most loved and recognizable in watch history.

A mechanical watch like the Rolex GMT-Master II hides hundreds of tiny parts that almost nobody gets to see. In our Los Angeles studio, our team arranges each gear, plate, spring, dial element and hand by hand, layer by layer, between clear acrylic panels, so the whole watch floats open in an exploded view you can study from every angle. It is slow, careful work, and our tribute to one of the greatest designs in watchmaking.
