Rolex Daytona (1963)

Rolex launched the Cosmograph Daytona in 1963, naming it after the legendary Daytona International Speedway in Florida, and built it for racing drivers who needed to time laps and measure speed from the wrist. Actor and race car driver Paul Newman made it famous, and his own Daytona sold at auction in 2017 for about 17.8 million dollars, one of the most expensive wristwatches ever sold. The “panda” look, a white dial with black sub-dials framed by a black bezel, is the most wanted Daytona style among collectors today.

A mechanical watch like the Rolex Daytona hides hundreds of tiny parts that almost nobody gets to see. In our Los Angeles studio, our team arranges each gear, plate, spring, dial element and hand by hand, layer by layer, between clear acrylic panels, so the whole watch floats open in an exploded view you can study from every angle. It is slow, careful work, and our tribute to one of the greatest designs in watchmaking.
