Rolex Submariner (1953)

Introduced in 1953, the Rolex Submariner was among the first wristwatches built to go 100 meters under the sea, with a rotating bezel to time a dive and bold luminous markers to read in the dark. Sean Connery wore one as James Bond in Dr. No in 1962, and since then the Submariner has become the most famous dive watch in the world, the reference every other diver is measured against. The all-black version, with its black dial and black bezel, is the purest form of that legend: clean, tough and timeless.

A mechanical watch like the Rolex Submariner hides hundreds of tiny parts that almost nobody gets to see. In our Los Angeles studio, our team arranges each gear, plate, spring, dial element and hand by hand, layer by layer, between clear acrylic panels, so the whole watch floats open in an exploded view you can study from every angle. It is slow, careful work, and our tribute to one of the greatest designs in watchmaking.
