About this piece

In 1971 Intel released the 4004, the world’s first commercial microprocessor: a whole CPU on one tiny chip with about 2,300 transistors. Originally designed for a Japanese calculator, it started the revolution that leads to every computer and phone we use today.

Most people never see the incredible city of circuits inside a chip. At FunBox Design, our studio team recreates the Intel 4004’s layout as detailed printed artwork, then casts it by hand in crystal-clear resin in our Los Angeles workshop, polishing every block until it shines. It is our way of turning a milestone of computing into something you can hold and keep on your desk.

WHAT YOU GET

  • The printed chip-layout artwork of the Intel 4004, sealed in crystal-clear resin
  • Please note: the chip inside is a detailed printed artwork of the real chip layout, not an actual chip
  • Cast and polished by hand
  • Ready to display on a desk, shelf or workstation
  • Size: 6″ x 4″ x 1″ (approx. 15 x 10 x 2.5 cm)
  • Handmade by the FunBox Design studio in Los Angeles
